McCandlish Lillard mourns the passing of Jack Rust. While Jack was a principal with ML for only 6+ years, he had an outsized influence on all of us who had the privilege to work with and learn from him. Jack was remarkable, and was a lion of the bar.
A tremendous human being, Jack was always “the smartest guy in the room.” He was understated, gentle and kind, and a great mentor to the younger attorneys during his time with ML, and after. As anyone who had the good fortune to work with him will attest, Jack was fun to be around. Well-versed in business, law and politics, Jack had a myriad of tremendous personal and professional accomplishments throughout his life.
Jack Rust was a mentor, and friend to many. He taught us, through his actions, his work ethic, and his treatment of clients and colleagues alike, what we needed to know about being good lawyers. We will miss staying in touch with our friend, but will always cherish our time with him, and the lessons that he taught us.
John H. Rust, Jr. made an indelible imprint upon all who have known him, and certainly those of us who have practiced law with him. We are better lawyers, and people, for having known him. We have all lost a truly amazing person who lived life with purpose, integrity, and grace. May God bless Jack Rust. RIP good friend.
