SARAH AVILES AND MELINDA MERK SPEAKING AT ADVANCED ELDER LAW UPDATE SEMINAR

McCandlish Lillard Wills, Trusts & Estates Principals, Sarah Aviles and Melinda Merk, will be speaking at the 34th Annual Advanced Elder Law Update Seminar 2025 on September 11, 2025, sponsored by Virginia CLE and the Virginia Academy of Elder Law Attorneys (VAELA).ย  This annual seminar tracks new cases, legislation, and regulations in the elder law area, while also exploring new and perennial topics vital to the elder law attorney. The topics are covered by well-respected attorneys in the elder law field.

Ms. Aviles will be presenting on the topic “Trustee Liability for Attorneys: What Can Go Wrongโ€”And How to Prevent It,” which will include a discussion of the duties of Trustees and common trust administration issues that may arise and how to best handle or prevent these issues. It will discuss the standards for breach of fiduciary duty as a Trustee, including how to deal with trouble with beneficiaries and the Commissioner of Accounts.

 

Ms. Merk will be presenting on the topic “Tax Tips and Traps for Elder Law Attorneys,” which will discuss various planning considerations and how to avoid potential pitfalls with regard to income tax and estate/gift/generation-skipping transfer tax issues that elder law attorneys may encounter in their practice.
